Hearing loss does not happen overnight. It creeps in slowly — first, you miss a punchline at dinner, then you start avoiding noisy restaurants, and eventually, you realise you are nodding along to conversations you cannot actually follow. For many older adults, the traditional route has meant a costly private audiology appointment or a long wait for support. As direct-to-consumer OTC-style hearing aids have become more widely available, the market has filled with cheap amplifiers that promise the world but often deliver distorted noise and painful whistling.

Our evaluation team set out to separate genuinely useful hearing devices from cheap plastic amplifiers. We acquired 13 of the most popular OTC-style hearing aids, from low-cost budget models to premium units, and subjected them to a rigorous 30-day testing protocol. We did not just test them in a quiet lab — we took them to busy cafés, windy parks, and crowded family living rooms. The data revealed a substantial performance gap, with one affordable device using dual-chip AI processing to outperform models costing many times more.
